1. Hello and welcome! Would you please introduce yourself and what you do in the band?
Heya! I’m Connor and I’m the vocalist/lyricist/Ultimate Punisher of the band haha!
2. How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard you yet? What are some of the influences that inform your sound?
I’d say NO LIFE is for the broken, each lyric screamed is a real lived emotion or experience; our intention is to make people connect and feel like they’re heard! Some influences we have are Slipknot, The Prodigy, Emmure and ten56.
We’ve started coining the phrase/genre Nu-DnBcore, so I feel like that best describes the soundscape we’re trying to make.
3. When and how did you come together as a unit? Also, I understand you’re originally from New Zealand but are now based in Australia. What precipitated that move?
No Life formed during the New Zealand Covid Lockdown in late 2021-early 2022. As for the move, it felt like a no-brainer: Australia has one of, if not the best, music scene in the world, so we decided to set sail pretty quickly to try grow the band and chase the opportunities that might not be possible in New Zealand.
4. The single “Foulmouth” just dropped. What can you tell us about it?
We’ve been sitting on this one for awhile now and after an 18 or so month hiatus from releasing music and some personal setbacks we wanted to write an ignorant and obnoxiously heavy track about how pissed off we were. With FOULMOUTH what you see is what you get, there’s no tongue in cheek metaphors it’s just straight aggression and fighting words.
5. What does the band have coming up (more new music, shows, etc.) that we should be keeping an eye out for?
We have a mini headline run coming up in October across the East Coast of Australia with some pretty cool bands and we’re bringing out some old friends for their debut Australian run which we’re hella excited for!
Further to that we have a lot more music to come, so keep an eye out!
6. What have been the highlights of the band’s existence so far?
Selling out our debut show in my hometown of Christchurch was a pretty surreal feeling, but the biggest highlights, at least for me personally, are getting Frankie Palmeri (Emmure) and Aaron Matts and Luka from ten56. on some of our tracks. Being such massive fans of both those bands was like a dream come true when they said yes to jumping on for a feature.
7. What are some goals you have for No Life that you haven’t accomplished yet?
Some goals we’d like to achieve that we haven't just yet is to break out a bit further and hit the markets of Japan, US and UK/Europe, that would honestly be unreal!
8. Is vegemite actually popular down there? I remember many years ago Brody Dalle from The Distillers saying Americans always associate Foster’s as “the beer” of Aussies but it’s actually “kangaroo piss” (or something similar) and people don’t really drink it. I’m curious about how our impressions in America match the reality.
Hahaha probably the wrong question when asking a Kiwi, for us it's Marmite ALL DAY!! and It’s yum but def an acquired taste haha I’ll give it up for Vegemite though, it’s a good second.
9. Who would you say are the current Big Four of metalcore?
Ooopphh tough question! I’m a slut for a good breakdown and some caveman riffs, so this might not be everyone’s choice but imo it’s THROWN, WAGE WAR, VARIALS and ALPHA WOLF.
10. A promoter with unlimited funds and artist access is putting together a one-night-only show with you on the bill. You get to choose the other four artists you’ll be sharing the stage with. Who are you picking?
Oh man don’t do this to me haha! I’ll say LIMP BIZKIT, THROWN, DUSKEE/MONRROE and SKEPTA.
